HOUSTON, TX - Russell Weil
I recently revisited Whataburger after years of disagreeing with those who believe that theirs is one of the best Hamburgers around. Past experiences have been less than impressive, as their patties tend to be leathery and overcooked. However, with a local food critic’s recent positive review on one of their new specialty burgers, I decided to give Whataburger another try.
Whataburger’s menu is full of speciality hamburgers. With options such as the Mushroom & Swiss Burger and an Avocado Bacon Burger, their selections are not run-of-the-mill. The newly introduced Pico de GalloBurger appeared to be something I would enjoy, combining two great cuisines - Tex-Mex and Hamburgers. This sounded like the perfect pairing - a large beef patty, two slices of Pepper Jack Cheese, Pico de Gallo, and Creamy Cilantro Lime Dressing on a toasted bun.
Waiting over 20 minutes for my order, I expected something exceptional (by Whataburger standards). Yet, after biting into the Pico de Gallo Burger, my reaction was that this was another Whata(boring)burger. While the meat was not the usual overcooked leather patty-style, it was undercooked, which did eliminate the usual dryness. What a trade-off.
There was little flavor with the exception of the excessive amount of Creamy Cilantro Lime Dressing that was overflowing from the burger making this one of the messiest I have ever eaten. Having this much sauce on a hamburger is often an attempt to camouflage poor quality meat. The meat in a burger is what’s most important.
Keeping this short, my overall experience was nothing special. The burger did not surprise me, giving me exactly what I would expect from Whataburger. However, given my recent experience at a local In-and-Out Burger, if I were stranded on a desert island with two hamburgers and could only choose one to rescue, Whataburger would get off the island hands-down!
Cheers to Eating More Burgers!
P. Terry’s Burger Stand is a popular chain that consists of eight Austin locations. The stand has a unique design and nostalgic vibe that separates it from other fast food restaurants. (Photo: Meredith Bethune)
Last night I continued my burger tour of Austin when I visited P. Terry’s Burger Stand on N. Lamar Blvd. Though I am generally skeptical when it comes to fast food, I must admit that this retro burger stand more than exceeded my expectations.
Here is an outside view of the P. Terry’s on 32nd and N. Lamar. The mid-century retro burger stand was designed by Structures, an Austin based structural engineering design firm. (Photo: Structures)
P. Terry’s has eight locations throughout the Austin area and the set up of each location varies. Some of the locations are drive thru only while other locations have indoor or outdoor seating. The P. Terry’s on 32nd and N. Lamar offers indoor seating, outdoor seating, and a drive thru option. I chose to order there and eat inside. Even though it was evening rush hour, the workers were very polite and the service was incredibly fast.

P. Terry’s menu is what I would consider short and sweet. The burger stand offers five different burgers and a combo option that includes fries and a drink. The menu consists of three types of hamburgers, a chicken burger, and a veggie burger. Each burger comes with lettuce, tomato, and P. Terry’s special sauce or mayonnaise. Onions, pickles, jalapeños, and ketchup are available upon request. P. Terry’s guarantees that their burgers and fries are made with fresh, all natural ingredients. The angus beef they use is vegetarian fed as well as hormone and antibiotic-free.

Last night I ordered the Chicken Burger but replaced the mayonnaise with special sauce. The Chicken Burger is made of 100% all natural ground chicken breast and includes swiss cheese, lettuce, and tomato. I also ordered a side of fries along with my meal. They were thin, crispy, seasoned with salt and so tasty. My entire meal was more than satisfactory and I would gladly visit the burger stand again in the near future.

Check out the P. Terry’s website for locations and operating hours. Most of the stands stay open until midnight on weekdays and some stay open until 3 a.m. on weekends! Can anyone say late night snack?
