Saw this when accidentally digging into a lava lake from below (survival mode) - I couldn't see the lava flowing down. except for the leading edge.

Trying to replicate in creative, I found that it is most noticeable when flowing lava blocks are stacked each other, the way glass becomes transparent when viewed through other glass.
