OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on. Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Similar issue for me but not regarding the upgrade. I have a Macbook Air and keep my Time Machine backups, iTunes and iPhoto libraries on an external network drive. I have searched for audio files and photo files in spotlight and have come up with only a few things in mail attachments. I cannot locate anything that would explain the amount of disk space being used by these types of items. I don't keep any such media on my machine locally and how do I determine what the blue other category consists of so I can clean it up as well?

Your laptop requires a certain amount of free space on the disk drive in order to function properly. When you are running low on available space you will get warnings about running out of disk space. You have several options.
1. Remove files and photos from your hard drive to free up more space.
2. Replace the internal hard drive on your Mac with a larger drive that will provide more space.
3. Add an external drive to your Mac to provide more storage space.

I too am a photographer and I know that photos add up over time. I try to remove photos that I know are no good and just erase them from my drives. But I also know that hard drives can and do fail. If you are only using the one hard drive in your system to store your photos you should look into a system that will allow you to keep backup copies of all your photos or at least your best an most important ones.
